Gonsalves does it again: corn for food, not for fuel!

St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves has spoken out against plans to develop bio- fuel technology that uses corn to replace petroleum. Gonsalves is joined by Latin American leaders such as Hugo Chavez, who say that it is unconscionable to consider using corn for fuel at ths point in word history. Their views are shared by U.N. Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Jean Ziegler, who recently called for a five-year moratorium on biofuels, saying it was a "crime against humanity" to convert food crops to fuel when nearly a billion people were hungry in the world. Gonsalves also pointed out that this mad haste" to produce bio fuels was resulting in a worldwide food price increase especially on corn and subsidiary products.
