Bob Marley's remains to be reburied in Ethiopia.
Associated Press Report

Thursday, January 13, 2005

The widow of reggae legend Bob Marley said she plans to exhume his remains in Jamaica and rebury them in his "spiritual resting place", Ethiopia. No date has been set for the reburial, but it will be after February when month long celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Marley's birth are planned in Ethiopia.
Both the Ethiopian church and government officials support the project, Rita Marley told The Associated Press and several other news organizations on Wednesday. "We are working on bringing his remains to Ethiopia," said Rita Marley, a former backup singer for her late husband's band, The Wailers. "It is part of Bob's own mission."
A spokesman for Bob Marley Music and the family later issued a statement quoting Rita Marley as saying that Jamaica "will remain the resting place for Bob Marley for the foreseeable future." Born in 1945 in rural St Ann parish in Jamaica, Marley rose from the gritty shantytowns of Kingston to global stardom with hits such as No Woman, No Cry and I Shot the Sheriff.
His lyrics promoting "one love" and social revolution made him an icon in developing countries worldwide. Marley died of cancer in Miami in 1981 at age 36.
Rita Marley said her late husband would be reburied in Shashemene, 155 miles (250 kilometers) south of Addis Ababa where several hundred Rastafarians have lived since they were given land by Ethiopia's last emperor, Haile Selassie.
Hundreds of thousands of Jamaicans embraced Selassie as their living god and head of the Rastafarian religious movement. Marley was a devout Rastafarian, a faith whose followers preach a oneness with nature, grow their hair uncombed into dreadlocks and smoke marijuana as a sacrament. About 700,000 people practice it worldwide.
"Bob's whole life is about Africa. It is not about Jamaica," said Rita Marley, a Jamaican singer who was born in Cuba and married the reggae star in 1966.
"How can you give up a continent for an island? He has a right for his remains to be where he would love them to be. This was his mission.

Bob Marley
I don't think Rita should leave Bob in his resting place I KNOW IT. The spirit of Bob was a long lived, aged spirit that saw many lives before. The bones are simple physical remains, and I don't see any reason to upset many tousands of people by moving Bob's physical remains. The spirit of Bob lives on all over this world, even in Ethiopia, It seems like Rita has little faith in the fact that her late husband was a great soul sent to unleash the message of Peace and Freedom. Oh Please Rita. leave this idea in the grave.

Jamaican People
I was born and raised in Cali, but if you were to come to my yard, a pure Jam Down yu would of tink you de, an you would of known you were in the house of a Rasta family. My father might have moved from JA but he never left JA behind. When he was on his death bed, it was not a grave in the US or Africa he wanted to be, but it was JA he wanted to sleep. What Rita is doing smells like Money.

Don't move him! Let him be!!
Rita, don't move Bob Marley from his resting place. He's very symbolic in Jamaica. Everytime I go to Jamaica to visit my family, I always visit his museum. It would hurt me dearly that when I do visit in the future, that his remains will no longer be in the country. Rita, you shouldn't remove him, just let him be.

what rita is doing makes no sense because all black people are african we all orginated from there. why would she wait until all these years to now move his remains it makes no sense. just leave the man let him rest in peace. many people come to jamaica just to see his museum. by moving him she is looking to start a riot and it might not be good for her.

::shrug shoulders::
I think Rita should leave Bob right where he is in Jamaica. People travel there to see him and his nice museum. And thats his birth country and he should rest there.

it was part of his dream anyway
i completely agree with rita. Most of us jamaicans seem to forget that jamaica isn`t even our homeland ,africa is.Bob always talked about going to live in ethiopia or zimbabwe after his carrier which obviously concludes that he wanted africa to be his final resting place.RIP Bob

He's Jamaican !!!
That is not right at all.. if thats what he wanted why didnt she bury him there in the first place. Hes Jamaican and should be buried in Jamaica. Fair enough his widow Rita Marley (who is re-married but still uses Marley) but she has no right to exhume the mans body. let his soul rest in peace. What has Ethiopis done fo r us Jamaicans. Does this means that all christians should now be buried in Bethlehem ????
