Cops say they have DNA evidence in Zeeks' double murder case
Wednesday, June 1, 2005
Jamaican police yesterday objected to bail application for Donald "Zeeks" Phipps when he appeared in the Half-Way-Tree Gun Court to answer to a charge of double murder. The cops say they have DNA evidence as well as a recorded telephone conversation relating to the case.
Zeeks, the so-called 'area leader' of the tough Matthews Lane community in downtown Kingston, is scheduled to reappear in court on June 22.
Zeeks, was taken into police custody nearly two weeks ago and is charged with the April 15 murders of Dayton "Scotchbrite" Williams and Rodney Farquharson. They were shot in their heads and their bodies taken to an open lot at Rose Lane, downtown Kingston and set afire. The police had earlier reported that bloodstains was seen along Matthews Lane and Rose Lane the morning the bodies of the two men were discovered.
The local Jamaica Observer reported Zeeks appearing dressed in a pair of blue jeans and red polo shirt when he appeared in Court yesterday. The Matthews Lane strongman, who was brought to court in handcuffs and under heavy police guard, had a calm yet melancholic disposition before he was taken before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.
His Attorney Churchill Neita QC told reporters he made an application for bail for his client on the basis that evidence coming from the prosecution was insufficient.

"Area Leader!!"
As a Jamaican who once lived in the ghetto and now living in New York, I am tired of hearing and reading about these "men!" being reffered to as "Area Leaders". These men do not represent the definition of a true leader, but more so of a ruler. "Men" like these, when talked about and written about, should be labeled as murderers, drug-dealers and criminals, nothing more!! These men are doing many harm to our (Jamaican) homeland. The cultural values and beliefs of this beloveD country is of no more significance. And if this continues Jamaica might be a place of the past. Something must be done to prevent such catastrophe. Love Jamaica(ns).
