Jamaica's Asafa Powell is the new holder of the men's 100m world record.

Tuesday, June 14, 2005

Asafa Powell from Jamaica blazed the 100m in 9.77 seconds to break the three-year-old record at the Athens Olympic Stadium on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old has repeatedly warned that he had the world record in his sights and Tuesday he proved that this was no idle threat.
Powell bettered American Tim Montgomery's previous mark of 9.78, which he set in Paris in 2002.
The world record will be consolation for Powell, who had gone to the Athens Olympics as favorite, only to trail home fifth behind winner Justin Gatlin.
Powell had spoken confidently about surpassing Montgomery's mark after he clocked 9.84 - the joint-third fastest time in history - in Kingston last month.

Jamaica A Run It
I was in Jamaica visiting at the time, when news reached the island that Asafa had broken the world record. The entire island was buzzing about it, everyone was very proud of him. His dad was elated with the news. I am proud that a Jamaican, who is very proud of where he is from, now holds the world record. Jamaica is on the up and coming in track and field, and I believe the world is in for a surprise. The best thing about Asafa's accomplishment is how humble and down to earth he is about the event. He does not appear cocky....unlike some people in the past.

MONROE COLLEGE (NEW ROCHELLE)
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANKS TO ASAFA POWELL FOR PUTTING JAMAICA BACK IN THE POSITIVE SPOTLIGHT. AND OFCOURSE, WE HAVE HAD RUNNERS COMING OUT OF THIS COUNTRY FOR ALONG TIME, SO IT SHOULDNT BE A SUPRISE, AND TO SAY YOU SUPRISED US WOULD BE AN INSULT. I MEAN, YOU SAID YOU DO IT, AND I BELIEVED IN YOU, SO DID EVERYBODY ELSE. WE JUST WANT YOU TO SAY THE WORD AS FAR AS HOW MUCH GOLD MEDAL YOU GONNA WIN BEFORE YOU GO BACK TO THE OLYMPICS.

PS. NO MORE BAD STARTS ASAFA!!! WE DONT WANT THE SAME THING TO HAPPEN FOR THE OLYMPICS.
