Italy has sent a shipment of heavy equipment to the Guyanese government just in time for the rainy season. Flooding in Guyana has killed more than 40 people over the past two years, an official said.
The equipment, which includes bulldozers and excavators worth a total of US$5 million, will be used to clear silt from canals and drainage channels in the coastal zone.
Ravi Narine, chief executive officer of the national drainage and irrigation board said they are looking at all the problems associated with flooding and are trying to counteract them in a coordinated manner.
About 90 per cent of Guyana's population lives in the country's flood-prone coastal zone.
