In a disturbing set of events, more than one hundred soldiers from the United Nations peacekeeping coalition in Haiti have been recalled from duty in that Caribbean island. Spokeswoman for the United Nations Michele Montas said that the accused officers from Sri Lanka's contingent in the UN mission in Haiti were repatriated on disciplinary grounds, pending a full investigation into the allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse by members of the Sri Lankan battalion stationed in various locations in Haiti Lanka's military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, said four local investigators had already traveled to Haiti to conduct preliminary inquiries before the decision to recall 111 soldiers and three officers. He said those being sent back were not proven guilty, but the authorities decided to recall them in the interest of ongoing investigations.
