Meanwhile in Guyana, officials fear that the simple matter of driving is fast becoming a matter of life and death! In news from the mainland Caribbean territory, Police are reporting that more people have died this year from road accidents than through crime related incidents. Guyana's Commissioner of Police Henry Greene has said that so far there have been 177 deaths on the roadways representing a 52% increase in road fatalities. Of that figure there have been 56 road deaths recorded in Georgetown and the East Bank of Demerara, 39 in West and East Berbice, 27 in the East Coast Demerara, 21 in West Demerara, 26 in the interior locations and 8 in Essequibo. According to official reports, in an 18-day period 24 persons died on the roadways.
