In news from Trinidad and Tobago, the government has been issued an ultimatum by newly elected United National Congress parliamentary representative Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj. Maharaj says the government must implement its Equal Opportunity Legislation within a few weeks or it could be held in contempt of court. The Equal Opportunity Act provides for the establishment of an Equal Opportunity Commission and Tribunal to provide redress to people who have suffered discrimination in the private sector. Maharaj, the former Attorney general who piloted the cause, complained to the Privy Council earlier this year. The Privy Council ruled on October 15 that the government had indeed acted illegally by its failure to implement the legislation.
