In Guyana, the Office of the President has announced a 9% pay hike for public service workers, retroactive to January 1, 2007. In a formal statement to the Press, the Office of the President (OP) said that formalities would be conclude to facilitate a pay out deadline not surpassing December this year. However, officials of the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), which represents the workers say they are unimpressed by this surprise move from the Office of the President, one day ahead of the planned meeting to resume negotiations. Officials have said that whilst the 9% is an increase form the 8% originally proposed by the OP, it still falls far short of the 14% the union had demanded.
