In Jamaica, five hundred and fifty-two students from Jamaicas University of the West Indies Mona Campus are no longer registered for this years semester.
A mid-October ultimatum set by the UWI administration for students to pay their fees expired and the University made good their warning to de-register those who couldnt pay by the deadline.
There have been protests by students and clashes with police. UWI Deputy Principal Joseph Pereira says only 163 students took up an offer to explain in writing reasons why they could not meet the October deadline. Those students now have until 30th November to pay the full amount.
About one-third of the student population missed the original September 3rd deadline for payment of fees for the 2004-2005 academic year.
