In the Eastern Caribbean, preparations are under way to host a visit from Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian. The president and his 100 strong delegation will be paying a two week visit to various islands in the Caribbean and Latin America. According to Taiwanese officials the President will attend the inauguration of Guatemala's President Alvaro Colom on January 14, 2008, then stop over in St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis and St Vincent and the Grenadines, islands with which it enjoys diplomatic ties. Meanwhile, there has been recent controversy in St Lucia, with Opposition leader Kenny Anthony publicly stating that Taiwan's Ambassador to St Lucia was getting too involved in private sector operations. Dr Anthony was referring to a series of construction contracts which he said the Ambassador should have no interference. Lucia re-established diplomatic ties with Taiwan after the United Workers Party (UWP) administration won the December 11, 2006 general elections.
