Hedi Annabi, leader of the United Nations Peacekeeping mission in the French speaking Caribbean territory has warned that an early withdrawal from haiti would compromise the years spent trying to restore peace in that country. According to Annabi, the security situation in Haiti has been significantly aided by the peacekeeping forces who together with local police, have been able to dismantle and disrupt many of the armed gangs in Haiti's capital Port au Prince. "If we were to downsize dramatically, we would leave a vacuum." The 9,000-member U.N. force includes some 1,200 Brazilians. Haiti has only 8,000 police officers, far short of the estimated 14,000 it needs to maintain minimum security, Annabi said. |
