An appraisal commissioned by Jamaica's People's National Party has shown that the main liability that caused the PNP's landslide defeat in the 2007 general elections, was none other than their chief party hat, Portia Simpson Miller. According to the appraisal team, spearheaded by Professor Brian Meeks of the University of the West Indies, a major contributing factor to the party's loss was that Simpson Miller waited too long to call the general elections and that the party entered the polls under the weight of the disunity created by its internal presidential contest, which made Simpson leader the Party leader. Other factors that led to the downfall include: Simpson's mishandling of the Trafigura affair, her defece of Minister Paulwell on his various transgressions during his term in office, the galring disuity beween Simpson Miller and party stalwarts who alienated her during the campaign, as well as her lacklustrer performance during the highly publicized national debate.
