Cuba's revolutionary leader Comandante Fidel Castro has officially resigned. In a statement published in Cuba's national paper the Granma, the 81 year old Castro said: To my dear compatriots, who gave me the immense honor in recent days of electing me a member of parliament ... I communicate to you that I will not aspire to or accept ... the positions of President of Council of State and Commander in Chief." Castro declared that he would continue to serve the country as a "soldier in the battle of ideas" and that he would continue to write on international affairs. US President George Bush had little to say about Castro's retirement, and all eyes remain on Cuba, as the era of Fidel draws to its end. |
