The war against Guyana's pirates of the seas is in full swing. Prosecutors in Suirname re preparing their case against 6 Guyanese nationals who have been brought in on suspiicion of piracy against local and foreign fishermen in Surinamese waters. The authorities say that the six-man gang, whose ages ranged from 25 to 35 years, had been targeting fishing boats but managed to elude Suriname police by hiding in Guyana after their attacks. But now that they have been caught, Suriname official have no intention of sending the men back home. "These men have committed crimes in Suriname waters, so it is our legal responsibility to try them here. We will not hand them over to Guyana," said solicitor-general Roy Panday. A top official from the Judicial Department of the Suriname Police Force has said that charges could be laid as soon as next week. |
