Ambassador Michael King, has assumed chairmanship of the organizations' second highest decision making body, the OAS Permanent Council. For the next three months, the new chairman is expected to steer the work of the Council, including its preparations for the upcoming OAS General Assembly in Medellin, Colombia, this June. In his first address to the council, the chairman stressed that the best way to see to the health of this hemisphere's political and democratic system is to deepen the emphasis on social justice. King called for increased emphasis on the rights of the marginalize, including women, indigenous people and disabled citizens of the 34 member organization.
