The people of Barbados called for reforms to what they called a failing education system in Barbados. At a town hall meeting held by the National Advisory Commission on Educations (NACE), local residents expressed their concerns. They want to do away with the 11-plus exams, ensure teachers are trained before they step in the classroom and emphasize reading at the primary school level. How can you have an exam over and over again where half of the children are failing? queried retired teacher Sherwin Walters in reference to the Common Entrance Exam. The country that gave us Common Entrance has abandoned the exam, said the former educator, adding that it was time Barbados did the same for an exam that determines the rest of your life. NACE is going around the country holding town meetings to hear more from the public about the state of Barbados education. |
