The Brazilian government has decided to send an envoy to South Africa to meet with exiled former President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Mr Aristide was forced from power following a violent uprising in February.Brazil currently leads the United Nations peacekeeping force in Haiti where there has been an upsurge in political violence in recent weeks.
Many believe the involvement of Mr Aristide at this official level is sure to make waves in Haiti where more than 80 people have died in violence over the past five weeks. Much of the unrest has centred on areas still loyal to the former president. Interim leader Gerard Latortue has accused Aristide of inciting violence from his exile in South Africa. At present about 5,000 soldiers and police officers are taking part in the peacekeeping mission in Haiti.
