American Airlines says it will offer nonstop flights between Miami and Grenada later this year, resuming a service suspended a decade ago. The U.S. carrier says it will begin flying Boeing 737-800 aircraft between Miami and Grenada on Nov. 20. The southern caribbean island is located some 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast of Venezuela.
Tourism Minister Claris Modeste-Curwen says the Wednesday announcement follows months of negotiations between the government and American Airlines. The daily service would offer the only nonstop commercial flights between South Florida and Grenada, and should help the island's tourism-based economy recover from devastating hurricanes in 2004 and 2005.
