The government of Jamaica has announced plans to set aside some five acres of public land to cultivate rice for local consumption. Jamaica's Minister of Agriculture Christopher Tufton, said he expected the island's private sector to make significant contributions to the development of this plan, which would help combat grain supply problems in Jamaica. Meanwhile the Guyanese Agricultural authorities have rejected Jamaica's claim that they are unable to meet the quota of rice exports to Jamaica. Guyana says Jamaica's decision to import rice from North American supplies undermines co-operation a trade policies between the two countries.
