The use of wheat grain and other crop for the production of biofuels in the US and Europe is one of the major factors responsible for the food crisis being experienced amongst the world's poorer countries today. This is the consensus of developing countries such as Cuba, Egypt and Pakistan who have successfully submitted a proposal that the United Nations investigate this issue which is a violation of basic universal human rights. Protests, strikes and riots have erupted in more then forty countries around the world due to dramatic rises in the prices of wheat, rice and other essential foods. The United Nations will hold a special session on the world's food crisis on May 23.
