Four men from West Africa who drifted into Guyanese waters after their yacht developed problems have requested refugee status in that country. The men claimed that they were sailing from Cape Verde to French St Martin in the Caribbean when they developed engine-trouble. The four are however now in the police custody awaiting trial for illegal entry.
They were rescued by Guyanese fishermen off the Corentyne coast in eastern Guyana on October 24 but Police said they were not taken to Immigration officials until the week after. Guyana's deputy Police Commissioner Henry Greene said they police are seeking help from Interpol to verify the identity of the four men.
The men are all in their 20s. They are Mamadou Ba of Guinea, Gabriel Camara of Gambia, Joao Manuel Lopez Da Cruz, of Cape Verde and Abdool Karim of Senegal
