The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has urged CARICOM countries to make agricultural production a priority to ensure food security in the region. In a report entitled IICA's Response to Rising Food Prices, the organization came out in support of bio fuels which it says creates an opportunity to stimulate agricultural production in the region. IICA'S director general Chelston Braithwaite says that while some attribute the food crisis to bio-fuels production, he feels that agro-energy can contribute to the world energy supply without being a threat to food security. .However, the IICA says this will only be of benefit if alternative sources to grain and cereals such as sugar cane, coconut oil, oil palm, agricultural waste and jatropha are used for the production of biofuels.
