Guyanas President Bharrat Jagdeo says the future of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) is dependent on the integrity of its members. Over the years there have been reports of corruption and bribery within CANU and Jagdeo announced the arrival of a specialist to polygraph its members. The Guyanese leader also noted that, before any new staff is added to that unit, he must first be convinced that the current ranks are honest and have integrity. Meanwhile, the president said he has ordered the Guyana revenue authority to contract overseas fraud investigators to look into a multi-million dollar scam involving over 20 customs officers in Guyana. To date, at least 25 customs officers have been sent off the job as investigations have thus far found that they were involved in the rip-off of the state.
