The union representing more than 500 workers at Alumina Partners of Jamaica, the Caribbean nation's largest bauxite and alumina plant, rejected a new pay offer from the company, a union official said on Wednesday. The National Workers Union said that it had turned down a proposal made by the company on Tuesday to increase wages and benefits. Union president Vincent Morrison would not disclose details of the offer. The workers were seeking a 60 percent wage increase over three years, with 30 percent coming in the first year, 20 percent in the second and 10 in the third. The company's last known offer was 22 percent over three years. Morrison said the offer was made at a meeting between the two sides that ended late on Tuesday. He said further talks would be held next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, to try to resolve the dispute.
