Minister of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Karl Samuda, has assured that there will not be a shortage of rice in Jamaica, as Guyana will be supplying the country with the commodity soon. "Recently we visited at the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), which was convened in Antigua and we deliberated the problems facing us with the supply of rice from Guyana. There were very serious discussions held and very difficult negotiations. Samuda noted further that following discussions with the President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, it was agreed that Jamaica would purchase 60,000 tones out of the 100,000 tones required by the country. The Minister said that 60,000 tones of rice would be purchased from Guyana per annum and that within two weeks Jamaica would be supplied with 14,000 tones of rice from Guyana, in addition to the nearly 3,000 tones now on its way.
