Haitian policemen report being beaten by UN peacekeepers

Monday, August 11, 2008

A local municipal official and witnesses to an incident has reported that Two Haitian policemen were severely beaten by UN peacekeepers in Haiti. They said the seemingly arbitrary attack on the plainclothes officers, occurred in Cite Soleil, a teeming warren of shanties on the south side of the impoverished Caribbean nation's capital. Cite Soleil Mayor Wilson Louis, in an account supported by several witnesses, said about 10 Brazilian members of the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti took part in the beating. The circumstances surrounding the beating are unknown. However, UN spokeswoman Sophie Boutaud de la Combe said the incident was under investigation and vowed that appropriate sanctions would be applied if the allegations of abuse and excessive use of force were confirmed.

Allegation of UN peacekeepers beating police officer
If these allegations are true, then this is unacceptable; with Haiti's increase in violence, and death, we don't need the so-called UN "peacekeepers", to intensify the turmoil that Haiti is facing with poverty, corrupt governmemt, and now the devasting hurricanes that killed 137 people.
