PRIME MINISTER David Thompson has appealed to banks in Barbados to review their policies regarding funding for new classes of entrepreneurs with no track record in business. He suggested that Government assist in underwriting loans to new entrepreneurs who do not satisfy what he termed "the stringent and unnecessary...criteria for lending". Speaking at the official opening of Scotiabank's Rockley branch recently, the Prime Minister also disclosed his Government's plans to increase the number of self-employed entrepreneurs from about 10 per cent of the working population to 20 per cent by the year 2016 through legislation, institutional structures and resources. He said the enterprise culture in Barbados had to be fostered in anticipation of the profound changes taking place in the global market.
