Representatives from the Dominican Republic, United States, Europe, Mexico, Philippines, and Australia recently attended the 25th International Sugar Symposium held in Hawaii. The symposium was sponsored by the American Sugar Alliance. Sucrose ethanol, which is increasingly being considered as an alternative energy source, was one of the chief topics discussed at this year's symposium. The Dominican Republic is in a good position to take a lead in supplying sugar cane and has already started shipping sugar to the European Union under a new economic partnership, that government officials say, could eventually triple the country's sugar exports.
