There is an upsurge in crime in all the Caribbean islands and this is reflected in the high number of criminal cases on the lists of the Criminal Assizes, which started in most countries last week. According to figures from the Jamaica Constabulary website there was an increase of 15% of murders while in Trinidad and Tobago the homicide rate went up by 65%. Jamaica has consistently been in the top three homicidal nations worldwide in the last five years, with an average murder toll of over 1,000 per year or about three murders a day; and 50 homicides in one weekend are nothing new for police in that country. Trinidad and Tobago however, is running close with comparative figures.
