Despite two recent mishaps on the Corentyne River, nothing is being done by those in authority to end this culture. Recently over 6 people died as a result of backtracking in the river between Guyana and Suriname. Guyanas Acting Police Commissioner Henry Greene said that the river border issue between Guyana and Suriname has to be settled before the Guyana police force could intervene. He acknowledged that the government was looking at the issue in terms, but had no information on the status of negotiations on the borders. Meanwhile, Guyanas foreign minister Clement Rohee is urging Passengers to use the legal route for travel to Suriname.
