World cricket players' representative Tim May has joined those supporting the stance of top West Indies players in the row with their regional board. Mays has been quoted as saying that the West Indies Cricket Board had offered the players a "ridiculous" contract for the one-day series to be played in Australia in January.
As things stand, captain Brian Lara could be among those to miss the tour. The row centres around official insistence that players cannot, without prior approval endorse rival companies to the WICB's main sponsor, which is the Irish telecoms firm, Digicel. The companys main rival in the region is Cable and Wireless, which has contracted several West Indies players, including Lara and team vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan.
Only nine of the 25 squad members invited by the WICB to a three-week pre-tournament camp in Barbados that started Monday had accepted. But Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland remains confident a full-strength West Indies side will tour in January.
