The implementation of minimum wage legislation in Barbados may result in either the failure of several businesses across the island or extensive layoffs. Executive Director of the Barbados Employers Federation (BEC), Harry Husbands, raised the concern recently while addressing a BEC seminar on upcoming legislation, specifically the Employment Rights Bill. While acknowledging the increase in cost of living that Barbados has experienced, Husbands said that an increase of approximately 34 percent over two years in the minimum wage would be difficult for certain business. He therefore encouraged BEC members to provide data to the organization on the likely impact of minimum wage legislation to support their arguments during the negotiating process.
