Cuba's President Raul Castro has completed his first year in power since taking over from his brother, Fidel, who ran Cuba for nearly 50 years.
The transition was smooth, despite many predicting communism would have collapsed without Fidels control.
Raul Castor took over the presidency on February 24, 2008 and less than as week as president he won widespread support for a series of small but symbolic reforms. He was successful in ending the island's international isolation.
He was also successful at reintegrating Cuba into Latin America, renewing the old cold war alliance with Russia, expanding ties with China and patched up relations with the European Union. However one of his greatest challenges remains, that is, how to respond to any change in policy towards Cuba from the United States.
