Two hundred and fourteen Haitians was returned to their homeland on Monday stated The United States Coast Guard after they were intercepted in a makeshift sailing freighter just east of Cuba .
Officer Barry Bena said the Coast Guard intercepted the freighter Friday night with 187 adults and 27 children, including 11 infants, aboard.
This report comes in the middle of a recent spike in Haitian migration to South Florida.
The Coast Guard said in January, there was a significant increase in migration, with 742 Haitians intercepted at sea.
Officer Barry Bena noted that there may be an incorrect perception amoung Haitians that the US presidential election indicated an immediate change in policy with regard to the return of Haitians in Haiti.
