Attorney General Freundel Stuart confirmed the decision that the government is moving to abolish the mandatory death penalty.
It will soon be up to the discretion of Judges in Barbados whether or not a person convicted of murder should be given the ultimate punishment of death.
There has not been a hanging- the method used to carry out the death penalty in Barbados since 1984.
Once the legislation is amended the presiding judge will be in a position to determine the type of sentence to be imposed based on the circumstances of the case Mr. Stuart.
In a letter written to the Inter-American Human Rights Court earlier this year, the government signaled its intention to make the change and said the decision came after extensive inter-ministerial consultation and full deliberation by Cabinet.
