Veteran lawmaker Reuben Meade won Montserrats General elections last Tuesday. Mr. Meade who led the Montserrat Government as Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996 successfully brought his Movement for Change and Prosperity Party (MCPR) back to power.
Mr. Meade's party won six of the nine parliamentary seats, with the remainder going to three independent backbenchers, including outgoing Chief Minister Dr. Lowell Lewis, who has headed a coalition Government since June 2006.
He said a key priority would be reviving Montserrat's struggling economy.
"We have to look at the development of tourism, we have to look at the exportation of sand, make it more efficient and we have to look at foreign direct investment. We know that the economic climate worldwide is difficult but we should be in a position, working with the Diaspora to deal with investment capital (as) a multitude of small amounts can in fact create large capital bases," said Mr. Meade.
