Antiguan authorities have providing an explaination as to why they seized the passports of a number of Guyanese children traveling with their parents following a letter from Guyana's Foreign Ministry who had written to the Antigua government seeking an
explanation of the move.
A government statement in St. John's explained that it had been introduced to counter a growing trend of minors from certain Caribbean countries traveling to Antigua on the pretext of a summer vacation. However, the statement said, they would ultimately remain in the country and seek to gain entry into the school system.
Antigua has now said that it had discontinued the policy and applicants for entry into Antigua may in future be required to post a bond.
