The Video Identification System (VIS) as well as the software for an Electronic Facial Identification Technique (EFIT) were commissioned into service at the police station in Ochos Rios, bringing to five the number of centres across the island.
The VIS was launched in March at the Central Police station in Kingston but was placed on hold after questions were raised regarding its legality. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green, the issue surrounding the use of the system has been addressed and the solicitor general Douglas Leys and the director of public prosecution, Paula Llewellyn, have given the force the nod for it to be brought back in operation.
The system is geared towards providing a more secure method for witnesses to identify suspects. Green is optimistic that the VIS will reduce the delays in holding identification parades in the parish as well as neighbouring St Mary and Portland. He said the VIS will also create a more relaxed environment for witnesses who will not physically see suspects.
Twenty officers from different police divisions have already been trained to use EFIT. Five have successfully completed the training and were presented with certificates.
