Gov't now expects to conclude Air J sale by March 31
Friday, January 29, 2010
The cash-strapped national carrier, Air Jamaica, is finally expected to be off the Government's books by March 31, the end of the 2009/10 fiscal year. Dennis Lalor, chairman of the Air Jamaica Divestment Committee, made the disclosure at a luncheon meeting hosted by Observer Chairman Gordon Butch Stewart at the newspaper's Beechwood Avenue office in Kingston.
"We are working with the Caribbean Airlines people with a view to completing by the end of March," said Lalor.
Government has, since mid-January, been having discussions with the Trinidadian-owned Caribbean Airlines for the sale of the airline.
There has been a lobby for the Air Jamaica staff, headed by pilots affiliated to the Jamaica Airline Pilots Association (JALPA), to retain local ownership.
However, Prime Minister Bruce Golding, in his address to Parliament, warned that any entity wishing to purchase the airline with borrowed money should forget the idea.
"I would advise them sincerely, don't go there. If you are not able to get in on the basis of equity, where you have the cash and you are prepared to invest that cash and put it at risk because you believe that you can make it work, then my advice is don't go there," Golding said.

why you shouldnt sell the air jamaica airline
since this new government came in parlourment he's been putting our counrty in alot of debts.i think that he should try some other way to pay off the debts that are owed, face it this is the one thing that we as jamaican can really call our own,and when u sell this what else will we have "nothing"we has jamaicans are pleeding with the government to think about it before he make a decision like this that could change all of our lives as jamaicans so as i end this comment that im making i would just like to say u guyz need to take more time to think about this before u proceed in making this decision.thanks

Shame On You !
To be honest this present government has no interest in preseving anything in the interest of the country ! There has been a public out-cry yet they dismiss the the public view and press ahead with the sale ! All they want to do is make a quick buck ! No airline has made a great profit in the last year or so,so why does this government try and help the airline rather than look to sell quick and wash their hands of it ! What should have happened is that previous goverments should have invested in the airline in the so-called good times ,better training ,better planes etc ! You see if Trinidad was the only offer then even though it's not liked but if they sell then they sell it to them but there is another bid ,but cause Trinidad can give them money up-front then they are going for that deal ,it may not be the best deal ,but all they can see is dollar signs ! I have a question - will it be bought back in later years if they (jamaican government) have the money to do so !
