A 64-year-old Guyanese teacher denied that he indecently assaulted a 16-year-old female student when he was arraigned in an Eleuthera Magistrates court this week.
Superintendent Theophilus Cunningham, the officer in charge of Eleuthera, reported that John Persaud appeared before Magistrate Stephen Wilson, the islands local administrator, in Rock Sound, Eleuthera, on one count of indecent assault.
Persaud, who teaches at Preston H. Albury High School, is alleged to have assaulted the student last month, Cunningham said. The teacher, who lives in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, was granted $3,000 bail with one surety of surrendering his travel documents. Additionally, he has to report to the local police station every Monday and Friday until the trial date, which is scheduled for June 17.
In the meantime, Persaud has reportedly been placed on administrative leave.
Over the past several months, a number of teachers have been accused of assaulting students and have been placed on leave.

Know the facts before you comment
Fact one. Dr. John Persaud was accused of assault on a male student not a female.
Fact two. The offence was said to have been committed four months before it was reported.
Fact three. His crime was putting his hand on the boy in order to discipline him ( not a wise thing to do in teaching)
No wonder he was cleared of all charges.
Dr. John Persaud is an excellent teacher and well respected in the community of Eleuthera. He has retired and returned home to Guyana, This man has earned the honour of a master teacher in the Bahamas. All guyanese should be proud of him. He has left a teaching legacy in this country that many guyanese should try to emulate.
