While his secretary of state wife is having multilateral talks in Barbados and parts of South America, former president Bill Clinton has gone back to help Haiti. Clinton returned to island in an effort boost the local recovery initiative from Januarys devastating earthquake.
This is Clintons first time back in Haiti after being named co-chairman of the Interim Haiti Reconstruction Committee to oversee the billions in aid that the country needs to recover. The committee will oversee more than US$5.3 billion in donor pledges for the next 18 months.
Clinton proposed credit programmes for small businesses at a meeting of community leaders yesterday in the coastal town of Leogane and pledged to negotiate with landowners to secure more space for housing.
He was also scheduled to fly to the neighboring Dominican Republic for the first meeting of the reconstruction panel he leads with Haiti's prime minister.
