Dr. James Dobbins a consultant with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is expressing certainty that cholera will spread across the Caribbean. He however cautioned that this is not expected to develop into an epidemic or result in deaths.
Dr. Dobbins stated that cholera could be brought to the Caribbean through visitors, but given the good health care systems in place, no large outbreaks would be expected as occurred in Haiti or the Dominican Republic.
The PAHO representative says given that only 20% of the persons who are infected have symptoms, then most people can be traveling around with the bacteria.
