Guyanas Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy issued an appeal for eligible blood donors to come forward and donate blood. The appeal came after assessment showed that hospitals across the country are running low on certain blood types due to increased surgeries ahead of the August vacation by a number of doctors.
The institution welcomes all blood types however theres a severe shortage of Types A Positive, O Positive, A Negative and O Negative.
Dr Ramsammy explained in his statement issued that the Blood Bank experienced a slow period of donations during the past two weeks, a situation that was compounded by heart and other surgeries. The minister added that many surgeons normally go on vacation in August and tend to perform elective surgeries at this time, resulting in increased pressure on the Blood Bank. Rather than wait on a crisis to happen, I thought I would call, he said.
