Suriname and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) signed contracts for two loans totalling US$20 million to help finance a conditional cash transfers programme and the national census and household survey.
One of the loans, worth US$15 million, will be used to finance Surinames Social Protection Support Programme. This programme provides assistance to underprivileged pregnant and lactating women. It is hoped that the programme reaches 15,000 households by 2015.
Additionally, the programme should substantially increase education enrolment rates, especially in secondary schools.
The other loan of US$5 million will fund the National Population and Housing Census and Household Budget Survey, which will yield updated demographic, social, economic, and cultural information about Suriname.
