Air Jamaica now "Stewart-Less"

Saturday, December 25, 2004

In Jamaica, The Government had gotten back 100 per cent of Air Jamaica. Successful businessman, Gordon 'Butch' Stewart of Sandals fame has signed over its 75 per cent ownership share back to the government. The airline has resumed state ownership after a 10-year hiatus.
But Stewart and his company have agreed to pump US$20 million into the airline, with the Government putting up an additional US$25 million in credit, so as to give the transition period a much-needed push-start.

Air Jamaica
Look for the next owner of the Lovebird to be Michael Lee Chin. Several months ago he expressed an interest in it. Aubyn Hill supposedly resigned from NCB and suddenly has been named COO of Air J. Food for thought! Hey Butch, is the U$20 mil part of the taxes Air J has not paid the government in 10 years? Air J needs to cut cost in many areas:- Get rid of the excess executives that serve no purpose other than flying around first class; that fancy paint job makes the planes heavier and uses more fuel; Cut out the full meals for the short flights, which will lead to less crew members; put someone in charge who wont steal!
