Dino Bouterse, the son of Suriname?s President Desi Bouterse will remain in custody for another two months as US authorities have set a new hearing date.
Manhattan federal Judge Shira Scheindlin extended the pre-detention of the 41-year-old Bouterse to November, when his trial is scheduled to begin. Dino Bouterse was arrested in Panama on August 29, and handed over to US authorities, and charged for drug trafficking and possession of illegal weapons.
Bouterse is characterized by the US as a dangerous seasoned narcotics trafficker, who as recently as last July shipped 10 kilogrammes of cocaine from Suriname though the Caribbean into the US.
If convicted, Bouterse could face life imprisonment. An associate, Edmund Muntslag, 29 remains in custody in Trinidad and Tobago. |
