The death toll of water-borne diseases in Guyana stood at 20 at the beginning of the week. The Health Ministry reported, four more people died from leptospirosis in the aftermath of devastating floods that hit the country. Among the one woman and 19 men who dies is Joseph Thomas, a well-known Journalist at the Kaieteur Newspaper.
Dr Ramsammy said health workers were distributing antibiotics to contain the outbreak and were reviewing hospital records to determine if other people have died from the disease.
At least 29 people, including five who drowned, have died since mid-January when flooding caused by the worst rains in a century hit Guyana.
