Guyanese top asylum refusal list

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

Guyana is a surprise entry in the top ten countries whose citizens are claiming asylum in the US, according to a new report by a federal commission.
Some 711 Guyanese applied for asylum on reaching US ports during fiscal year 2002 to 2003. But only three percent were successful. That placed Guyana at number nine in the asylum seekers list.
Just as surprised were members of New York's Guyanese community.
Also faring badly in asylum applications was Haiti. Cuba came out on top of the list.

guyanese seeking asylum
this doesn't really surprise me at all.I mean the economy is on a downward spiral, the crime rate is up ten folds....damn we heading for a civil war pretty soon at this rate.Added to i don't think the government is doing enough to alleviate this situation. When you got a small country like guyana with population probably just over a million or so,we shouldn't be having this problem. We got everybody trying to leave the country in one way or the other. They are talking about brain drain....what are they doing to keep the skilled people around?Cost of living is getting higher everyday and the people are not being remunerated equally.Sooooo........now we have people looking at different avenues to make it in life.
Even though this situation doesn't surprise me,i'm still heart broken to see what a beautiful country like guyana has come to.
