The deadline set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security ending Temporary Protected Status for 292 Montserratians and their families passed quietly on February 27. But there was no major exodus by those ordered to leave the U.S.
Instead, news reports say some are bent on staying here as undocumented immigrants and will fight deportation orders if they are issued.
Several of the illegal aliens have steady jobs and have built a life here for themselves and their families. Some also have bought homes, on which mortgages are owed, and have young children in schools.
